On the occasion of the Congress of the Regions of France, these Monday and Tuesday in Bordeaux, we are revealing to you the results of a major Ipsos survey for Régions de France, Transdev and France Bleu on the mobility of the French. The main lesson is that we are still very dependent on the car.
The majority of French people use their car regularly for their trips.
The French remain addicted to the car for their everyday journeys. This is the main lesson of the vast Ipsos survey for Transdev, Régions de France and France Bleu, carried out among more than 10,000 people from July 15 to 29, 2019. This study provides a panorama of unprecedented magnitude of the French and mobility in the regions. It is published on the occasion of the Congress of Regions , which takes place on Monday and Tuesday in Bordeaux.
Nearly nine in ten French people use their car regularly
The study reveals that 87% of French people use their car for at least one of their daily trips: going to work, shopping, doing their leisure time, or going to the doctor. But this figure should be qualified, because 21% of French people only use the car for daily commuting. A figure that rises to 36% in rural areas, where the car is often essential to get around.
The private car therefore remains the most used means of transport, ahead of walking, practiced by 75% of French people for their daily commute. In particular, it is the most used way to go to the pharmacy (56%). 49% of French people also go to La Poste or carry out administrative procedures on foot.-
Six in ten French people drive to work
61% of working people use their car to go to work. Even residents of urban centers remain fairly dependent on the car to get to work: 43% use it regularly, compared to a third (33%) who use public transport .
In the inner suburbs , the car becomes the majority, with 55% of residents using it to go to work, against 27% who use transport. In peri-urban areas , the place of the car is still growing with more than three quarters (77%) of inhabitants using it to go to work against only 10% who use public transport. In rural areas , 74% of workers use their car to go to work.
Impossible to do without the car to go shopping
In addition, three quarters of French people who use their car for this type of trip say that it would be impossible for them to do without the car to do their major food shopping. They are 65% to consider it essential to go to work or to their place of study. 68% cannot do without it to go to the doctor and the pharmacy, and 60% to go to La Poste.
A third of French people use public transport regularly
Public transport of any kind (bus, metro, train, tram, etc.) is used by a third of French people (31%). Carpooling and carsharing are used by a minority of French people (5% and 2%).
To use the car less, more transport closer to home
To use their car less often, respondents say they would need on average a bus stop 8 minutes from home, a tram stop 14 minutes, and a train station 16 minutes from home. To make more use of public transport, two-thirds of French people (67%) also want a higher frequency of transport such as coaches, buses and trains near their home.
Seven out of ten French people (69%) also want the implementation of a transport price lower than the usual cost of their trips by car . Two thirds (66%) would also like to be able to benefit from a single transport ticket to be able to go to one place, even if they use different transport.-
The share of cycling is increasing
On the other hand, non-motorized two-wheelers are increasingly used: bicycles and scooters are regularly used by one in eight French people (12%) and even more among young people (16% of those under 35). 3% of French people regularly ride a bicycle or electric scooter.
